The Space Between Us Book Review

The Space Between Us Blog Header

How beautiful is this story! Thrity Umrigar’s The Space Between Us was one of my favourite past Shelterbox Book Club reads and I am so glad I picked it up!

What is The Space Between Us About?

The Space Between Us tells the story of two women who lead very different lives in India, the server and the servee, but who have formed what seems like an unshakeable bond through years of shared experiences.

Both women experience their own personal tragedies and question how their lives have played out at various points. Bhima’s struggle to work through her Granddaughter’s issues and how she is treated by each of the different characters makes for compelling reading and left me thinking about the book long after I had finished.

What I Thought of Thrity Umrigar’s The Space Between Us

I clung to the hope that the villain of this story would get their comeuppance until the very last word and felt such a deep compassion for the character of Bhima and her lifetime of struggles, it is really a testament to Umrigar’s character-building and emotive writing.

This book was so heartbreakingly beautiful, I wanted so badly for Bhima to get the happy life she really deserves, she was so beautifully written. Throughout the course of events in Bhima’s life, we are able to explore the parallels and differences between how she and Sera live their lives and experience the world and learn just exactly where the line in the sand lies when it comes to their complicated friendship.

A captivating read and the perfect choice yet again from Shelterbox’s book club, I can’t wait to find out which world we will be exploring next!
